The NFL pre-season began last week for all 32 teams, including the Atlanta Falcons. The Dirty Birds are hoping to shake off last year’s mediocre 8-8 season. The Falcons will head across the street to Mercedes-Benz stadium after this season, so will their last year in the Georgia Dome be a memorable one? We ask GPB sports correspondent Jon Nelson what he thinks of the Falcon’s chances this year and their prospects for the future.

Next, a collection at Emory University sheds light on the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s by showcasing photos by an Atlanta photographer. Billy Howard documented dozens of people who were HIV positive and asked them to write a reflection on their photograph. We talk with Howard about the collection, and we hear from one of his subjects, who explains why he waited a decade before taking his antiretroviral medication. And according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta is the fifth-highest metro area for new HIV diagnoses. We check in with AID Atlanta executive director Nicole Roebuck about the high infection rates. 

Finally, the Savannah Voice Festival is in full swing this week. One of the operas showing on Tuesday tells the story of a ghost rumored to be haunting Savannah’s Wright Square. We talk with composer Michael Ching about his opera, “Alice Ryley,” and we hear from the star of the show, James Wright. Afterwards, we ask the festival’s founders Sherrill Milnes and Maria Zouves to add two more songs to our growing Georgia Playlist.
