The start of April brings plenty to do in the Hostess City. Bevin Valentine Jalbert of Paprika Southern and Marianne Ganem Poppell of Savannah Master Calendar have some tips.Bevin and Marianne share their weekend recommendations.

Marianne's picks:

-Men will stand up - and walk - for women at this year's Walk A Mile In Her Shoes around Forsyth Park. Participants don women's shoes to raise money and awareness for the Rape Crisis Center of the Coastal Empire. Thursday, 5:30-8:30 p.m.; $10.

-Enjoy a day of food and culture at the Gullah/Geechee Gold Rice Festival, happening at Dr. Martin Luther King Memorial Park on St. Helena Island. Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

-Spend an elegant evening, 1920s style, at Savannah State University's annual scholarship gala. This year's theme is SSU: An Intellectual Renaissance, so attendees are encouraged to take their inspiration from formal attire of the Harlem Renaissance and the 20s generally. Saturday, 7:30 p.m.; $150.

-First City Network is hosting its monthly social at Sheriff John Wilcher's house this month. Bring a drink dessert or $5 to enjoy a night of networking and fellowship. Saturday, 7-10 p.m.

Bevin's picks:

-Judge Realty will unveil their latest public arts project, Come Rain or Come Shine by Elmer Ramos and Ben Tollefson, with a block party. Enjoy games, drinks and light bites. Friday, 4-7 p.m.

-Check out some local art at Sulfur Studios' Spring Street Fair and First Friday Open Studios. Local vendors will be selling, plus the SCAD Ceramics Club's annual show is on display and Artist in Residence Rob Hessler will perform. Friday, 6-9 p.m.

-Henny Penny is turning one, and throwing a party to celebrate. Kids can enjoy a petting zoo, caricatures, crafts and sweets while grown-ups sip beer and wine. Friday, 6-9 p.m.
