We're headed into a hot summer weekend and the Fourth of July, with plenty of events to keep you entertained in and around Savannah. Joshua Peacock of the Savannah Morning News and Claire Sandow of the Tourism Leadership Council have some tips.Joshua Peacock and Claire Sandow talk weekend events

Claire's picks:

  • Ready for a picnic? The U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors will perform a free concert in Forsyth Park, complete with food trucks from Chazito's, Big Bon Pizza and Leopold's from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the concert at 7 p.m.; free.
  • Escape the heat with a trip to an air-conditioned movie theater. The Lucas Theatre is playing Rear Window at 7 p.m. Friday and Disney's Tarzan at 3 p.m. Sunday. Over at the Trustees Theater, it's Zombieland at 7 p.m. Saturday. All shows are $8 general admission; the Lucas is $5 for students, seniors and military.
  • Travel back in time at area state parks this weekend. Wormsloe State Historic Site will offer a glimpse into the British occupation of Savannah during the American Revolution from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; $2-10. Fort McAllister will celebrate the Fourth of July nineteenth-century-style, with old-timey games, Civil War drilling and firing and a Civil War-era baseball game from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; $5-9.
  • Eat your fill and then some at the Bluffton Boiled Peanut Festival at Bluffton Oyster Factory Park. The festivities include a cookoff, an eating contest and all-you-can-eat boiled peanuts from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday.

  • Have a raucous good time at Savannah's wildest pageant, the 3rd Annual Mr. Savannah Pageant at the Jinx, presented by the Sweet Tease Burlesque Revue. Local gents will compete for up to $500 in prizes with interview, swimsuit and talent categories. Doors open at 9 p.m., with competition from 10:20 p.m. to midnight; $10.
  • It's a throwback Fourth of July at Fort Stewart, where Three Doors Down, Jagged Edge and LOCASH will perform. Be sure to bring ID and check the entry rules ahead of time. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., with the concert from 7 to 11 p.m. and fireworks at 10:30; free.
  • Enjoy a jazzy Fourth at the Fabulous Equinox Orchestra's Swingin' Savannah River celebration at the Westin. Seating on the lawn will offer a view of both the band and the fireworks over the river, from 8 to 10:30 p.m. Wednesday; $35 general admission, $75 VIP.
