A cell phone video making the rounds on social media has prompted an internal affairs investigation by The Athens-Clarke County Police Department.
The video shows a 10-year-old boy being held face down on the ground by a pair of officers following the arrest of his father after a domestic disturbance. Bodycam footage released by police shows what came first: an emotional outburst following the arrest in which the boy leapt at one officer.Police say a 10-year-old boy leapt after an officer during the arrest of the boy's father.
During a press conference, department spokesperson Epifanio Rodriguez said the use of force against the boy was unfortunate but necessary.
"The situation they had in front of them, they had to get that under control," Rodriguez said.
Late in the bodycam footage, the boy is shown tearfully saying goodbye to his father before the dad was taken away to jail.
The officers in the video have not been suspended during the still pending internal investigation
