Blasts, Bird Calls: Okefenokee Clearing Trails

Visitors to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge may hear blasts among the bird calls over the next few weeks.
Rangers are working with the U.S. Forest Service to clear sections of over a hundred miles of water trails. They’re covered with debris and trees from recent storms and wildfires.
Refuge Ranger Susie Heisey said they are using dynamite to clear remote parts of the trail because it’s quick and least disturbing to nearby animals.
“A similar project was actually done on a different portion of trail a couple of years ago," Heisey said. "And they saw no evidence that there was major or long-term impacts to the wildlife.”
They aim to re-open the closed parts of the trail this fall.
