Environmentalists Sue FAA to Release Spaceport Documents

The Southern Environmental Law Center is suing the Federal Aviation Administration for documents related to the proposed Camden County Spaceport.

The Center submitted two Freedom of Information Act requests in March, asking the FAA to publicly release documents about environmental impact and possible hazards of a spaceport on Georgia’s coast. 

Their attorney, Brian Gist, said the documents describe what will happen if a rocket fails: “So where will the debris land? Are there potentials for fires on Cumberland or Little Cumberland Island? Are we expecting damage to private property? Are we expecting fatalities?”

So far, the FAA has not responded.

In a written statement, Camden Commission chair and Spaceport proponent Jimmy Starline said it takes time to process “complicated and voluminous” requests, but he believes the FAA will comply with federal law.
