Students In Southwest Georgia Return To School After Hurricane Michael

Some students in Seminole County returned to school Monday for the first time since Hurricane Michael hit in early October.

The school districts superintendent warned parents to be wary of any debris that may affect bus routes and dropping students off. 

Renea Pierce, principal at Seminole County Elementary School, said a few classrooms were badly damaged, but they have been able to make repairs or relocate classes.

She said teachers came back about a week ago but now the focus shifts to the students.

"They need structure," Pierce said. "They need focus and that's what we're going to provide. We're going to provide the tools and we're going to provide the resources and we're gonna provide the academia that they need and they've missed."

She said parents she's talked to are ready for schools to open to help regain a sense of normalcy.

The county's school board is set to meet Monday, Nov. 12, when they'll decide on how to make up the missed days.
