Super Bowl 53 gets underway in less than one month. The action will take place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on February 3. Before the game and entertainment, the Super Bowl committee and the arts advocacy group, WonderRoot, are collaborating on murals to highlight the city’s civil rights and social justice legacy. The Off the Wall project seeks to elevate key stories from Atlanta’s pursuit of civil and human rights. Eleven muralists were chosen to create designs based on community conversations. GPB’s Ross Terrell and WonderRoot executive director Chris Appleton joined “On Second Thought” to discuss the Off the Wall initiative.

Culinary historian Michael Twitty traces his ancestry—both black and white—through food. In his memoir, "The Cooking Gene," he asks the question: "Who owns Southern food?" We talked with him in 2017 when he came to Atlanta.

"On Second Thought" continues its Main Ingredient series in which a chef tells us about his or her essential Southern ingredient. For Chef Savannah Sasser, that ingredient is sorghum. "On Second Thought" host Virginia Prescott visited Sasser at The Expat, in Athens, Georgia, where she is executive chef.

New museums and historical landmarks help create conversations about current social issues and America’s ugly past. In June, we spoke with Savannah-based community organizer Amanda Hollowell and Nicole Moore, manager of education and museum content at the Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta, about exhibits like those at the National Museum of African-American History and Culture and the Center for Civil and Human Rights.

GPB's Stephen Fowler reports on possible replacements for Georgia's outdated and insecure election system. The Secure, Accessible and Fair Elections (SAFE) Commission is expected to make recommendations before the legislative session begins Jan. 14.
