Stacey Abrams To Deliver Democrats' Response To State Of The Union Address

Former Democratic nominee for governor Stacey Abrams will deliver remarks on behalf of Democrats following President Donald J. Trump's State of the Union address on Feb. 5.

Senate minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) made the announcement Tuesday afternoon, and a representative from Abrams' camp confirmed with GPB News.

Abrams narrowly lost the gubernatorial election to Gov. Brian Kemp last November, and in the months since has kept her toes in the political waters. After announcing the end of her campaign, Abrams launched Fair Fight Action, a nonprofit voting rights group that has filed a wide-ranging lawsuit against the state's election system. 

She has also been seen meeting with congressional leaders, including Sen. Schumer and 2020 presidential candidate Kamala Harris in recent weeks. Abrams is widely considered to be a favorite to challenge Georgia Republican Sen. David Perdue in 2020, and has told reporters she would make a decision about her next political steps by the end of March.

Since the administration of President Lyndon B. Johnson, the response to the State of the Union has been delivered by a member of the opposing party following the President’s remarks.

Last year’s rebuttal was delivered by U.S. House Representative Joe Kennedy III. (D-Mass.)
