Super Bowl 53 A Big Win For Georgia High School, College Football Programs

The New England Patriots clinched their sixth Super Bowl win Sunday in Atlanta, defeating the Los Angeles Rams 13-3. Though it was the lowest-scoring game in Super Bowl history, it was still a big win for college and high school football programs across Georgia.  

Jon Nelson, host of GPB's "Football Fridays in Georgia" podcast stopped by "On Second Thought" to explain Super Bowl 53's deep roots in Georgia.

Former Georgia Bulldogs Sony Michel, David Andrews and Isaiah Wynn won their first Super Bowl with the Patriots. Their Patriots teammates Ufomba Kamula, Jonathan Jones, Shaq Mason and Ulrick John also have Georgia roots, as alumni of Starr's Mill High School, Carrollton High School, Georgia Tech and Georgia State, respectively. Patriots offensive tackle Trent Brown grew up in Albany.

For Michel, who scored the sole touchdown of Super Bowl 53, it was a mini-reunion with another star running back from UGA: Todd Gurley, who now plays for the Rams. Gurley’s Rams teammates Ramik Wilson and Gerald Everett also returned to their roots. Wilson played with Gurley at UGA and Everett played at Columbia High School. Also a homegrown Georgian: Rams coach Sean McVay, the youngest coach in the league and an alumnus of the Marist School in Atlanta.
