Early Voting Starts Monday For Gwinnett County And Some Atlanta Residents
Primary Content
Early voting starts Monday for Gwinnett County residents and others living in Atlanta’s District 3.
For Gwinnett County, it's a vote on public transit expansion.
Last year, commissioners approved a contract with Metro Atlanta's Rapid Transit Authority.
It includes plans like adding heavy rail in the southern part of the county, bus rapid transit farther north, and other services like paratransit.
But residents must also vote yes on a 30-year, 1 percent sales tax to create funding for the expansion. Gwinnett commissioners say that would create more than $5 billion in available funds.
Gwinnett County Chairwoman Charlotte Nash has called the vote the next big decision for residents.
Meanwhile, for Atlanta residents living in District 3, primarily on the west side of the city, a special election kicks off to fill a vacant city council seat.
Former Councilman Ivory Lee Young Jr. passed away last November after his battle with cancer. He served on the post since 2002.
Eight candidates are running to fill the seat.
The final day to vote in both elections is March 19.
