Tax day may bring relief to the masses, but expect spam phone calls to increase until April 15.

A study analyzing 15 million consumer complaints to the Federal Trade Commission found Georgia among the "States Most At Risk For Tax Season Scams."

Georgia ranked 28th with 1,655 robocalls complaints per 100,000 people, but a county-by-county breakdown revealed those in metro Atlanta are most at risk of annoying calls. Cobb, Fulton and DeKalb counties placed in the top 50 nationwide for targets of phone scammers.

The research showed these Internal Revenue Service calls increased by 20 percent in March and April, leaving many exposed to tax-centric scams.

The IRS released a detailed statement regarding cyberthieves last tax season, reiterating that they will never “call demanding immediate payment” or “ask for credit or debit numbers over the phone.”

If taxpayers receive a call and don’t owe or don’t think they owe any tax, the IRS recommends:

  • Contact the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. Use TIGTA’s “IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting” web page to report the incident.
  • Report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission. Use the “FTC Complaint Assistant” on FTC.gov. Add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your report.

Police in the DeKalb County city of Dunwoody last month posted a warning about all kinds of fraudulent phone calls as residents reported increased scams.
