New Book Celebrates 'The Strength And Spirit Of Boyhood'

Photographer Kate T. Parker's book, The Heart of a Boy, celebrates the strength and spirit of boyhood through personable portraits.

Atlanta-based photographer Kate T. Parker's book, Strong Is the New Pretty, showcased girlhood in all its messy, muddy glory. The book featured portraits of girls and young women whose beauty came from being their authentic selves.

Now she's doing the same thing with boys. Her new book, The Heart of a Boy, is out April 2. Parker joined On Second Thought to discuss the messages of empowerment that run through her books.On Second Thought host Virginia Prescott speaks with Kate T. Parker.

Parker said she didn't set out to do a book focused on boys. After meeting with parents and kids on her book tour for Strong Is the New Pretty, she said she was inspired to create The Heart of a Boy.

"I was floored by the variety and the depth of feeling and the vulnerability that these boys were willing to share," said Parker. "I realized that their stories are not being told."

The Mason Fine Art Gallery, in conjunction with Little Shop of Stories, is hosting an event for Parker's book on Sunday, April 7 in Atlanta.
