Coastal Ga. Weekend: Savannah, Coastal Events April 25-28
Primary Content
It's another spring weekend in Savannah, and there's plenty to do (much of it outdoors). Tanya Milton of the Savannah Tribune and Heather Henley of the Savannah Morning News have some tips.Tanya and Heather preview the weekend.
Heather's picks:
- Celebrate a historic local woman when a new historical marker is dedicated honoring Mary Musgrove, who as an interpreter between Yamacraw Chieftain Tomochichi and British General Oglethorpe was a key figure in the founding of Georgia. The dedication is at 5:30 p.m. Friday in Lafayette Square.
- Explore even more history with the Early Bird's Preservation Walking Tour led by the director of the Davenport House and focusing on the personalities, structures and issues of Savannah's preservation movement. The event includes refreshments at the Davenport and runs 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday; $21.
- Enjoy art outdoors at the annual SCAD Sidewalk Arts Festival. SCAD students, alumni and high school students will leave their colorful mark in Forsyth Park, transforming squares of sidewalk into works of art from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
- Take a springtime stroll through the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens at Birds Bees & Blooms. Learn about birds and other critters, take gardening workshops, shop the plant sale and more from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday; $10 adults, kids free.
Tanya's picks:
- Walk for a cause in Daffin Park during the March For Babies, a 5K that caps off months of fundraising to support the March of Dimes' efforts to ensure babies are born healthy. The walk begins at 10 a.m., with registration at 9.
- Take your fundraising efforts downtown for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, which begins in Ellis Square and helps fund breast cancer research. Race begins at 8:30 a.m.
- Have a jazzy Sunday as the Coastal Jazz Association celebrates Duke Ellington with a tribute concert at the Westin. The Savannah Jazz Orchestra will perform his music along with special guests form 5 to 7 p.m.; $20 for guests, free for members.
