We’re just a few weeks into the harvest for Georgia’s most famous crop, peaches, and farmers are already calling it one of the best they’ve had in years.

GPB's Sophia Saliby reports on the beginning of harvest season for Georgia peaches.

Most farmers started picking peaches earlier this month.

Duke Lane is a farmer and President of the Georgia Peach Council.

He says, so far, all indicators point to a great season. That’s even with the drought-like conditions some parts of the state are experiencing right now.

"This year, it just seems like every, single thing is going our way, so again, we’re just excited [and] glad to get going.”

Lane estimates Georgia farmers will harvest about 70 million pounds of peaches this season. That’s 20 million more than last year.

Peach season ends in mid-August.
