State Senator Donzella James On Making Juneteenth Official In Georgia

This month, communities all across the state are celebrating a holiday known as Juneteenth.
On this day in 1865, more than 250,000 slaves in Texas were told about their freedom two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
In 2011, Georgia became the 37th state to recognize Juneteenth.
GPB's Leah Fleming interviews state senator Donzella James
State Sen. Donzella James of College Park was one of three senators to help push the bill through in Georgia.
She joined GPB's Leah Fleming to discuss the meaning behind the holiday and how she helped give it official recognition in Georgia.
With several events taking place this past weekend, more Juneteenth festivities are scheduled all around Georgia, including in Athens, Atlanta, Augusta, Snellville, and Tybee Island.
