Next to breathing, Googling must be among the most commonly performed tasks in contemporary life. Everyone is familiar with the homepage, and that little illustration around the search bar — that is a “Google Doodle.”

Arantza Peña Popo is the winner of the "Doodle for Google" contest.

This first Google Doodle was created in 1998 when the burning man symbol appeared behind the Google logo. The temporary decorative flourishes became more sophisticated, honoring birthdays, holidays, championing political movements and even incorporating games.

Each year the company holds a “Doodle for Google” contest and invites k-12 students to participate. This year the winner is from Arantza Peña Popo, an 18-year-old from Lithonia.

The theme for this year’s contest is “When I grow up I hope…” Peña Popo told On Second Thought intern Jessica Lowell about her submission, “Once You Get It, Give It Back.”
