Emory Remains Prepared To Treat Ebola Patients, 5 Years Later

Emory University reflects on Ebola outbreak, five years later.

A team of specialists at Emory University will never forget Aug. 2, 2014. That's the day Kent Brantley, an American missionary based in Liberia, became the first of four patients with the Ebola virus to arrive at its Atlanta facility. 

The eyes of the world watched as the Serious Communicable Diseases Unit ⁠— in hazmat suits, successfully treated Brantley and three other patients with the highly infectious disease.

On Second Thought host Virginia Prescott speaks with Dr. Colleen Kraft.

Though that crisis faded from the headlines, an active Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is now a health emergency. 

The team at Emory is innovating on what they learned five years ago to help treat the disease now. Dr. Colleen Kraft is an infectious disease specialist and physician who was part of the original Ebola team at Emory. Kraft spoke with On Second Thought host Virginia Prescott about her experiences with Ebola patients.
