UGA Returns To The SEC Championship For The Third Year In A Row
Primary Content
For the third time in as many years, the University of Georgia football team will be playing in the SEC Championship in Atlanta.
The Bulldogs will face the LSU Tigers this Saturday with a trip to the College Football Playoffs on the line. The last time these two teams faced off in the conference championship was 2011. Back when the Georgia Dome was still hosting the game.
LSU won then, 42-10. But a lot has changed since that matchup. The Georgia Dome has been demolished along with the BCS rankings.
Now, the game is played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and UGA enters ranked fourth in the nation against an LSU team who’s ranked No. 2.
IJ Rosenberg with Score ATL said as far as the Dawgs getting into the CFP, they control their own destiny.
"Georgia's just got to go out and win the game,” Rosenberg said. “You don't need to impress anybody, just find a way to win the game and you're going to find yourself in the playoffs."
Georgia has seen LSU in the SEC Championship three times since 1992. They have alternated wins and losses over the first three matchups with LSU winning in 2003 and 2011. UGA got its only win in 2005.
The winning team in each of those matchups has scored at least 34 points and Rosenberg said Saturday’s game will be no different.
"It's not going to be 10-7 or 14-10,” he said. “It’s going to be a big score and Georgia's going to have to be able to put the ball in the end zone to beat LSU."
If Georgia wins, they can secure a spot in the CFP, returning for the first time since 2018, when they lost in the National Championship to Alabama in Atlanta.
The game kicks off Saturday at 4 p.m. and will be broadcast on CBS.
