Gov. Brian Kemp announced new statewide restrictions to help slow the spread of the coronavirus Monday.

The order closes bars and nightclubs, bans most gatherings of 10 or more people and requires vulnerable Georgians to stay at home.

Officials in Kemp’s hometown of Athens have already ordered people to shelter-in-place since last week and residents there are expected to stay indoors unless traveling for work, getting groceries or medical care. People also can go outside to exercise, but must follow social distancing guidelines.

Kelly Girtz, the mayor of the Athens-Clarke County unified government, joined GPB Morning Edition host Leah Fleming on Skype to chat about the developing situation in his area.
