Killer Mike Hosts Virtual Conference With Black Grassroots Activists

Atlanta-based rapper and activist Michael Render, who is known as Killer Mike, hosted a press conference Tuesday, June 2, 2020.

Rapper Michael Render, better known as Killer Mike, spoke Tuesday about the need for black grassroots activists to have support from their communities.

Render featured several prominent grassroots leaders at the Zoom press conference, including Judith Browne Dianis of the Advancement Project, who argued that the problem facing black Americans is systemic.

"So, there may be arrests, more arrests, there may be actual trials and a lot of cases," she said. "We know there are not even trials. You don't get that far. There may actually be a conviction somewhere along the line. But that still is not going to be enough to bring justice to black people."

Reverend Mike McBride, director of the Live Free Campaign, said there is an important social dialogue occurring right now.

"Work is happening every day to literally save the soul of this country," he said, "to redeem the soul of this country and make sure that the democracy is not unraveling right before our eyes."

Render made headlines for his impassioned and off-the-cuff speech during a press conference with Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms following protests that escalated into rioting Friday night. At that time, he told Atlantans it was their duty "not to burn their own house down."
