A Southeast Georgia woman's family is suing the Camden County sheriff over the raid that led to her death.

Latoya James was killed by gunfire as sheriff's deputies executed a drug warrant at 5 a.m., knocking down the door at her cousin's house last year in May.

Family attorney Harry Daniels said deputies surprised the house's occupants, prompting James' cousin to open fire and deputies to shoot back.

"We want to know why they didn't give them the respect and the common courtesy to even let them make a verbal response: 'Who's at the door? Who is it?'" he said.

The family is claiming a civil rights violation, similar to charges brought against officers in the Breonna Taylor case in Kentucky.

The local district attorney declined to bring criminal charges against the deputies.

A spokesman for Sheriff Jim Proctor did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment.

The lawsuit seeks at least $25 million in damages.
