The breakdown
1. Remembering the January 6th insurrection two years later.
- The violent effort to overturn the presidential election prompted former President Donald Trump's second impeachment and the House Committee investigation into January 6th.
- Earlier insurrectionists have had their legacies repainted as American heroes, like Confederate President Jefferson Davis, whose statue currently sits in the U.S. Capitol. It's unclear how January 6th will be painted years from now.
- Georgians who stormed the Capitol are still being tried; a Savannah man is facing four charges this month, including violent entry.
2. Rep. Kevin McCarthy faces his fourth day of voting in his bid for Speaker of the House.
- According to the Washington Post, this delay to elect a speaker is the longest in 202 years.
- Among Republicans voting against McCarthy is Rep. Andrew Clyde (R) from Georgia's 9th District.
- The AJC exclusively reports that McCarthy held a fundraiser for Clyde in Buckhead this past October.
Monday on Political Rewind: The AJC's Patricia Murphy joins the panel for the first day of the legislative session.
