LISTEN: The Atlanta City Council is meeting to hear public comment and then vote on $31 million for the controversial public training center known to opponents as “Cop City.” GPB's Peter Biello reports.

As of 11 a.m. on Monday, June 5, the Atlanta City Council was meeting to hear public comment and then vote on $31 million for the controversial public training center known to opponents as 'Cop City.' 

More than 350 people signed up before the meeting to speak.

Some spoke in favor of the project, citing the need for adequate training facilities and criticizing opponents of the project as privileged environmentalists and out-of-towners.

Opponents characterize the training center as an expensive perpetuation of racist policing.

During the meeting in the chamber, audience members complained about the process of signing up for public comment, prompting counselors to amend the agenda to give more people a chance to speak.

The vote is expected to take place after public comments conclude.
