LISTEN: GPB's Sarah Kallis delivers the Lawmakers Capitol Report for Day 22 of the 2024 Georgia legislative session.
The day started with the seating of new House Rules Chairman, Representative Butch Parrish.
House Speaker Jon Burns welcomed him to the position, and Rep. Parrish thanked Rep. Mandi Ballinger for the work she did after the loss of Rep. Richard Smith last month.
In the House, members approved House Bill 872. It would give student loan forgiveness priority to dentists practicing in rural areas. Dental students would learn they were accepted into the program while they are still in school. The bill passed 150 to 3.
In the Senate, Senate Bill 212 would allow small rural counties to replace a probate judge who handles election issues, with an election board. But the financial impact of the bill on those counties was a concern. The bill passed 32 to 12.
Lawmakers also held a press conference today advocating for more funding for sexual assault crisis centers. They will return to the Gold Dome on Tuesday for Day 23.
Join host Donna Lowry and capitol reporter Sarah Kallis at 7 p.m. on GPB-TV for the 54th season of GPB's Lawmakers.
