Black faith leaders expressed support Thursday for President Joe Biden as other voices call for Biden step down following a poor performance at a presidential debate against former President Donald Trump and concerns about his age and cognition.

While the leaders Thursday called Biden’s performance at the debate “poor,” they said he should not step aside.

Bishop Reginald Jackson, who represents over 500 African Methodist Episcopal churches in Georgia, said it’s frustrating to see the calls for Biden’s resignation.

“Let me challenge the Democrats in saying: Rather than asking whether or not Biden should step aside, why don't we look at his record?" Jackson said.

Jackson also said he believes Biden’s policies benefit his community more than Trump’s.

"Don't listen to the pundits," he said. "Listen to your heart. Listen to your character. Listen to your soul. And I guarantee you, you will vote right. You will vote for our democracy."

So far, Biden has said he will remain in the race.
