Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2024, is National Voter Registration Day.

In Georgia, county offices, universities and private groups are holding events to help Georgia voters register before the Oct. 7 deadline ahead of the 2024 general election on Nov. 5.

The purpose of recognizing the day is to "encourage all eligible voters to participate in our democracy at the polls," messaging on the Fulton County website said.

Four MARTA stations in Fulton County will also host registration tables at the Five Points, North Springs, College Park and Hamilton E. Holmes stations.

Fourteen locations in Clayton County will host events Tuesday until 5 p.m.

Voter advocacy groups including Poder Latinx and Women Engaged are also holding events in the metro Atlanta area.

Georgia Southern University is hosting events Tuesday at its Armstrong and Statesboro campuses.

In a statement, Jamie Scalera-Elliott, the department chair for political studies, said a Pew Research poll showed the 18 to 29 group of voters made up 27% of non-voters in 2024. That's because many students aren’t registered to vote.

“Their vote does matter,” Scalera-Elliott said. “Sometimes students aren’t registered to vote because they don’t know where to register, whether they should go back home or whether they can register where they’re living now.”

Events help drive registrations, but any eligible Georgia voter can register online or via mail.

According to the Georgia secretary of state's website, to register to vote in Georgia, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States;

  • Be a legal resident of the county;

  • Be at least 17 1/2 years of age to register and 18 years of age to vote;

  • Not be serving a sentence for conviction of a felony involving moral turpitude;

  • Have not been found mentally incompetent by a judge.
