The Georgia Senate committee studying the issue of transgender students participating in school sports heard testimony Thursday at the state capitol.

The Georgia Senate committee studying the issue of transgender students participating in school sports heard testimony Thursday at the state capitol.

During the hearing, senators opened the floor for public comment that included supporters and opponents of proposed restrictions excluding transgender girls from girls' sports.

“What is happening here in the effort to inject gender identity rights into sport, Is that we are actually making women inferior to trans women," said child welfare attorney Tom Rawlings, who came to express his support for restrictions.

Meanwhile, Kim Siders, the parent of a transgender girl, said the restrictions were unnecessary and harmful

"A lot of people ride the bench," she said. "And same for trans kids. Like, they're not all going to be super athletes."

The committee is expected to announce legislative recommendations for transgender girls in sports at its final meeting. Those recommendations could become bills in the 2025 legislative session.

President-elect Donald Trump said on the campaign trail that he will pursue a ban on transgender women in women's sports.
