On Sept. 27, when Hurricane Helene hit the Southern Appalachians, rain from higher altitudes transformed the river into a deadly flash flood, ripping a path of destruction through Erwin. The flood claimed lives, leveled homes and businesses, and forced an emergency helicopter evacuation of Unicoi County Hospital, which opened next to the river in 2018.
