Austin Elementary School’s Sarv Dharavane is returning to the Scripps National Spelling Bee for the second year in a row, after winning the 64th Georgia Association of Educators State Spelling Bee on March 21.

After District District 7 winner Sarah Daoud missed the word “epaulierie,” a suit of armor covering the shoulders, Dharavane correctly spelled “berghan,” a bird of prey, then “compas,” a popular form of music in Haiti, to seal the victory.

Daoud, a seventh grader from Greenbrier Middle School, was the runner up in the District 7 competition held in January.

Last year, Dharavane tied for 22nd place in the national competition, which matched his expectations for his first year in the spotlight. The national competition will be held in the Washington D.C. area on May 27-29.
