Since boyhood, Husam Abukhedeir wanted to become a doctor and serve his people. He overcome obstacles to get his medical credentials and practiced neurosurgery at Al-Shifa Hospital. Then came the war.

On Monday, 28 newborns were evacuated from Gaza to Egypt, after being transported from Al-Shifa Hospital. Four mothers accompanied the babies. It's not known how many of the other parents are alive.

NPR's Steve Inskeep talks to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about Israel's war on Hamas. Netanyahu says once Hamas is defeated, Israel has to make sure there is no resurgence of terrorism.

More than 200 medical personnel have been killed since the war started. Their colleagues say there's been no time to mourn. In that spirit, doctors shared details about the lives that were lost.

Hamas denounced the actions by the Israeli military. The group denied the assertion by Israel and U.S. officials that militants were embedded in Gaza City's Al-Shifa Hospital.
