Two U.S. food companies have received the go-ahead to sell chicken grown from cultivated animal cells in a production facility. It's the first time meat grown this way will be sold in the U.S.

The meatball is a one-off and has not been tasted, even by its creators, nor is it planned to be put into production. Instead, it was intended to get people talking about the future of meat.

GOOD Meat, which grows chicken and other meat from animal cells in a production facility, is the second company to cross this hurdle. The move brings no-kill meat closer to sale in the U.S.

The FDA has taken a first step towards green-lighting cultivated meat. The agency gave a safety nod to Upside Foods, which provided documentation to show their meat grown from animal cells is safe.
