Lynx, tiger and tadpoles, oh my: See the Wildlife Photographer of the Year winners

A lynx stretching in the sun, tadpoles swimming beneath lily pads and an investigator dusting a tusk for prints are among the winning images from the newest Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards.

<strong>Portfolio Award Winner: </strong><em>The ancient mariner. </em>Pangatalan Island, Palawan, the Philippines. The tri-spine horseshoe crab has survived for more than 100 million years but now faces habitat destruction and overfishing for food and for its blood, used in the development of vaccines.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year winners show the beauty — and precarity — of nature

The winning photographs star different species from around the world, all highlighting the interplay between animals and humans. The two grand titles went to shots of a horseshoe crab and barn owls.

<em>Dome home</em>, by Vidyun R Hebbar, India, winner, age category: 10 years and under. Vidyun watched a tent spider as a tuk-tuk passed by. Exploring his local theme park, he found an occupied spiderweb in a gap in a wall. A passing tuk-tuk provided a backdrop of rainbow colors to set off the spider's silk creation. Tent spiders are tiny; this one had legs spanning less than 15 millimeters.

Immerse yourself in nature with these 2021 Wildlife Photographer of the Year images

The top two winners of the 2021 Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition were selected from more than 50,000 entries worldwide. They are a biologist from France and a 10-year-old from India.
