Cane toads are notorious pests in Australia, colonizing habitats and poisoning other wildlife. Park rangers euthanized the 5.95-pound animal, whose body will be donated to the Queensland Museum.
The Queensland government agreed to return more than 160,000 hectares of land, including the historic Daintree National Park, to the Eastern Kuku Yalanji community.
The name change comes after years of activism from the Butchulla Aboriginal people, who inhabited the island before colonization. K'gari means "paradise" in the Butchulla language.
