A nonprofit nonpartisan watchdog group filed a lawsuit Friday charging the State Election Board with violating Georgia’s Open Meetings Act after meeting last week without legally required public notice or a quorum.

A media personality who co-founded a conservative political action committee has been appointed to a seat on the Georgia State Election Board. Georgia House Speaker Jon Burns, a Republican, on Friday announced the appointment of Janelle King to the board, effective immediately.

A Georgia Senate committee wants to give the appointed State Election Board the legal power to investigate Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger's handling of elections. But Raffensperger's office says it's unconstitutional for board members to legally oversee him.

The Georgia Senate is nominating a fifth member to the State Election Board. Former state Sen. Rick Jeffares must still be confirmed by the full Senate after the Thursday announcement by Lt. Gov. Burt Jones.
