In a memo addressed to staff, CEO Daniel Ek said it was necessary for the company to "rightsize" after hiring too many people during 2020 and 2021. Roughly 1,500 workers are likely to be let go.

Lyft will "significantly reduce" its staff to cut costs, said CEO David Risher, who took over as the ride-hailing company's leader just this week.

The wave of layoffs in tech, media and elsewhere is affecting a sizable number of people who are out on medical or parental leave. While legal, it can make a bad situation even worse.

The announcement comes after the company said it was laying off 18,000 employees in January.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the company is cutting another 10,000 jobs after it laid off 11,000 workers late last year.

Zoom, a hallmark of pandemic life, is laying off some 1,300 employees, or about 15% of its workforce. CEO Eric Yuan said he and other executives will take pay cuts and forgo bonuses.

The layoffs at Google follow similarly huge cuts at Microsoft, Amazon and Salesforce. Tech companies who hired rapidly during the pandemic now face fears of recession.

Amazon, Salesforce and Goldman Sachs have also announced cuts during a brutal January for corporate workers.

Last month, tech companies laid off about 50,000 workers, many of them immigrants on work visas. Now they have to find a job soon or leave the country.
