Georgia in Play: Atlanta Pride, 50 years of hip-hop, and Banana Ball hits the road
Primary Content
LISTEN: This week on Georgia in Play: Atlanta's getting ready to host its annual Pride festival — here's what you can expect. A new poll suggests Generation Z may face a worsening mental health crisis, but in spite of everything, they're remaining optimistic. And the Savannah Bananas take their own blend of baseball and performance on the road.
Highlights from the show:
Atlanta Pride gears up for its annual festival
The Atlanta Pride Committee announced its weekend lineup. Swedish pop duo Icona Pop will headline the festival, which also features the iconic Pride Parade. Host Leah Fleming spoke with Executive Director Chris McCain about the organization's history, and what attendees can expect this weekend.
Atlanta Fashion Week brought new looks to Southern stages
Last weekend, Atlanta's iconic Fashion Week brought designers from around the world to the Peach State to show off their latest collections. Leah sat down with Qaysean Williams, affectionately known as the "one-hand sewing man." Williams was featured on Netflix's Next in Fashion, and he spoke on his career, what his abilities mean to him, and what keeps him designing.
Generation Z faces worsening mental health challenges with staunch optimism
According to a new Gallup poll, "zoomers" are less likely than previous generations to report their mental health as "excellent." It's part of an overall trend for all generations, but what does it mean for young people? NPR's Hidden Brain host Shankar Vedantam weighs in.
Hip-hop turns 50 — celebrating a genre that helped put Atlanta on the map
If you ask someone on the street who their favorite act out of Atlanta is, you'd probably hear a dozen different answers. On Aug. 11, 1973, hop-hop was born in the Bronx, but GPB's Sonia Murray has covered the Atlanta scene for decades. She weighed in on the anniversary with some stories of her own.
The Savannah Bananas take the circus to a stadium near you
If you've ever seen a Bananas game, you've seen pitchers on stilts, umpires dancing behind the plate, and other antics you wouldn't see at Truist Park. The Savannah Bananas recently announced a "world tour," bringing their own blend of entertainment and baseball (lovingly called Banana Ball), to six MLB stadiums around the country. GPB's Benjamin Payne has followed the Bananas' meteoric rise, and he breaks down the team's latest announcement.
