Week 11 Milestones: Collins Hill’s 200th Win Equals Playoff Trip
Primary Content
The 200th win in program history at Collins Hill carried extra meaning since the victory assured the Eagles will return to the playoffs.
T.J. Wilcox threw for 137 yards and four touchdowns, two of them to Quentin Grambo, and Stephen Johnigan rushed for 100 yards for the Eagles in a 35-0 win over Central Gwinnett.
Collins Hill, in its first season under coach Drew Swick, improved to 3-6 and is assured of finishing no worse than fourth in Region 8-7A. A win over Dacula in the season finale would earn the Eagles the No. 3 seed, while a loss would drop them to No. 4. The Eagles missed the playoffs last season.
Collins Hill has amassed a record of 200-134 with four region titles and the 2021 state championship in 30 seasons. The winningest coach is the late Alan Fahring, who started the program in 1994 and went 51-32 in eight seasons.
Bryan County wins first region title
Bryan County won the first region championship in school history by beating Savannah 66-8. Austin Clemons and Gage Javis each ran for two touchdowns in the victory.
The Redskins, coached by Cherard Freeman, are 8-1 and have lost only to Class S Division II No. 7 Telfair County, a non-region opponent. Bryan County is ranked No. 9 in Class A Division I.
Bryan County began playing football in 1976 and has made the state playoffs six times. The Redskins won their subregion title in 1991, but lost to Treutlen in the first round of the region playoffs.
Losing streak ends for Mount Zion
Mount Zion Jonesboro snapped a 28-game losing streak with a 12-7 win over Woodland Stockbridge. Its last win came on Nov. 20, 2020, against McDonough. The Bulldogs got interceptions from Ronnie Terry and Courtney Preston, a fumble recovery by Jyshon Campbell and a 60-yard touchdown pass from Desmund Thomas to Terry.
Providence Christian to make playoff debut
Providence Christian earned the school's first playoff spot by beating East Jackson 55-27. The Storm (7-2) began playing football in 2011 and produced the first winning season in program history under first-year coach John Russ. Ben Klassen threw for 410 yards and six touchdowns, Caleb Lee caught 16 passes for 305 yards and four touchdowns, and Quinton Slaughter ran for 250 yards and two touchdowns in the victory.
Spencer coach wins 50th
Spencer coach Joe Kegler notched his 50th victory when the Green Wave beat Central Macon 43-0 on Friday. Kegler is in his third season at spencer after spending three seasons at Carver Columbus, where his teams won two region championships, and three years at Jordan. Kegler was the offensive coordinator at Carver under Dell McGee and was promoted after McGee joined the staff at Auburn.
Calhoun misses playoffs for first time since 1999
Calhoun's 23-year streak of making the playoffs was snapped in its 52-29 loss to Cass. The Yellow Jackets (6-4) failed to qualify for the postseason for the first time since 1999, which was the first season for Hall of Fame coach Hal Lamb. Calhoun played for the state championship two years ago and were in the GPB rankings all season.
