December 12, 2018. On that date nearly five years ago, the Milton Eagles won their first, and to this date, only state championship in the program’s now-74-year history. The opponent that night, the favored Colquitt County Packers, the team they will host tonight in the quarterfinals of the GHSA Class 7A playoffs. This will be their first meeting since that night.

Our Emmy Award-winning GPB Sports coverage kicks off at 7:30 p.m. on GPB-TV Georgia Public Broadcasting.

Head coach Ben Reaves, who was the offensive coordinator for coach Adam Clack at the time, says that 2018 state championship game was the ultimate example of sticking to the game plan. Milton’s goal was to stay as close as possible in first half against Colquitt’s high-powered offense and then play keep-away in the second half. Reaves says his team’s belief and confidence in the game plan grew as the game went on.

So did the Packers’ frustration. At the end of the night Milton had won 14-13. While the Eagles celebrated, many of the Colquitt County players walked to the locker room without shaking hands and then-coach Rush Propst, in what would be his final game as Packers coach, begrudgingly stepped onto the podium to “accept” the state runner-up trophy.

Propst would later tell many, including GPB Sports, that the Packers were the better team that night and would win that game again, many times, if they played it again. Well, that opportunity hasn’t happened, until tonight. Propst is long gone, but that sentiment remains with many in the Packer Nation.

That hasn’t been lost on the Eagles. So, when the Maxwell projections were published in GHSF Daily this week and it showed that Colquitt County was a 13-point favorite, Reaves says he “just smiled.”

Current Packers coach Sean Calhoun has nothing to do with all that past. He was the Carrollton head coach at the time, but he was the OC for Propst in two of the greatest seasons in Packers history -- when Colquitt went 30-0 over the 2014-15 seasons with two state championships and a 2015 national championship. Those Packers teams scored 1,387 points and averaged 46.2 points per game.

Since returning to Moultrie, the Packers have gone 25-1 under Calhoun with their only loss coming to his former team Carrollton 35-27 in the 2022 state semifinals.

All of this may lead you to believe there is bad blood between the two programs but if there is -- not saying there is -- there certainly isn’t any between these two head coaches. In fact, they were once roommates back in their assistant coaching days at Berrien and then Collins Hill.

So, on this Thanksgiving weekend, I’m giving thanks for great competition, in the spirit of good sportsmanship and the blessing to bring you once again another GPB Sports Playoff Friday in Georgia.

So that’s the game preview. Let’s take a look at the top prospects to watch this evening.
