GHSA State Basketball Recap: Day 2

It was a good night for the establishment at the Georgia High School Association state basketball tournament in Macon.
On Thursday, the Mount Paran girls and Westside-Augusta boys made it three in a row in Class 2A and Kell's boys successfully defended their Class 5A title. The Maynard Jackson girls won the 5A championship, which yielded the first title in school history.
Friday’s schedule begins at 1 p.m. with the Class 3A girls game between Hebron Christian and Wesleyan, followed at 3 p.m. with the 3A boys game between Sandy Creek and Johnson-Savannah. The Class 6A games will feature the Marist vs. North Forsyth girls at 5:30 and the Riverwood vs. Alexander boys game at 7:40 p.m.
Girls: Class 2A
Ciara Alexander scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead No. 1-ranked Mount Paran to its third straight state championship, a 59-52 win over No. 2 Josey.
The Eagles (29-3) also got 16 points and 14 rebounds from Jessica Fields and 11 oints form Jacalyn Myrthil. Mount Paran finished the season with a 15-game winning streak.
Josey (28-4) was led by Kerri Fluellen with 29 points and Ke’Asia Henderson added 17 points.
But turnovers undermined Josey’s efforts. The Eagles committed 20 turnovers that led to 16 points for Mount Paran.

Boys: Class 2A
LaVontay Ivery scored 14 points and Jarious Adkinson added 11 to spark No. 1 Westside-Augusta to a 64-29 win over No. 4 Toombs County and bring home its third consecutive state championship.
The Patriots scored the first 10 points of the game and led 31-14 at halftime. Westside outscored Toombs 23-10 to put the game away.
Westside (28-4) also got eight points from Xavier Goss and a team-high eight rebounds from DeMarco Middleton.
Toombs County (29-3) was led by Dominic Eason with nine points and six rebounds.
Westside had too much inside strength and outscored the Bulldogs 34-6 in the paint.

Girls: Class 5A
Maynard Jackson’s Shakira Gresham led her team with 21 points and eight rebounds, and the Jaguars defeated Midtown 58-44 to earn the school’s first state championship.
Jackson got off to a slow start, but outscored Midtown 18-8 in the second quarter to take control. Midtown got as close as three points in the third quarter, but could not complete the comeback.
Jackson (29-1) also got 13 points from Aaliyah Weaver and 11 points and six rebounds from Taliah Cornish. The Jags caused 22 turnovers, which resulted in 27 points, and scored 36 points in the paint.
Midtown (27-6) was led by Kevin Bockman with 23 points and Hailey Wortman with 11 points. Cate Barton and Briaiah Lewis each had 10 rebounds.
It was the fourth time Jackson has beaten Midtown this year. The two teams both played in Region 5 and Jackson won both regular-season games and beat the Knights in the finals of the region tournament.

Boys: Class 5A
No. 1 Kell rode a powerful performance from senior C.J. Brown, who had 21 points and nine rebounds, to a 62-51 win over No. 2-ranked Eagle’s Landing to successfully defend their Class 5A championship.
Kell (28-3) finished the season with a 27-game winning streak. Jaylen Colon added 14 points and six rebounds. Cannon Richards scored eight points with 10 rebounds.
Eagle’s Landing (23-8) got 17 points and six rebounds from Chris Morris. Dwight Brown hae nine points and eight rebounds.
The big difference was on the glass. Kell outrebounded Eagle’s Landing 35-25 and scored 16 second-chance points.
Kell put it away with an 8-0 run in the middle of the fourth period that included a pair of 3-point daggers from Collin Staphylaris (who scored nine points) that extended the advantage to 13 points.
