The Gold Standard In High School Hoops
Primary Content
When you talk about the Miller Grove Basketball program the question I always have is: What do you do for an encore? Coach Sharman White’s Wolverines are the gold standard in the realm of Georgia high school hoops. Miller Grove High School has won an incredible six straight state titles. Six.....straight. That is a commitment to excellence that has to be admired. At this point in the season, this year’s team is 19-3 and ranked No. 1 in Class 5A. The Wolverines are led by junior Alterique Gilbert who is averaging 19 points, 7 assists, and 8 steals a game. While #3 leads the way, he has plenty of help in the form of Lamont West who is averaging 18 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks per game; Raylon Richardson who is averaging 12 points and 8 rebounds; and Gamaun Boykin who is averaging 10 points and 3 steals per game. This season’s squad is winning by playing good team basketball, showing great defense, sharing the basketball and playing for each other. It is slightly ironic that at the same time, the Atlanta Hawks are finally getting a lot of recognition for playing great team basketball; that group tipped off the season with a preseason workout at Miller Grove High School. Maybe some Wolverine magic attached itself to the Hawks. When you have a legacy like Miller Grove, every opposing team circles the date of the game on the calendar as “the Big one” and Coach White told me he feels a great responsibility to be prepared for each and every game. I asked the coach if he every sits back and reflects on the program that he has built and all the success he and his players have worked so hard to accomplish. "Not really, I will think about it when it’s all said and done. Right now I'm really enjoying the process of preparing for this season," he replied. There has been nothing like this in Georgia high school history: six straight state championships is the record right now. The Wolverines dreams and goals include a seventh straight this March in Macon.
