It was a rough week for No. 1-ranked teams throughout Georgia on opening night. Three of the seven top-ranked teams were beaten, leaving Carrollton atop the poll in Class 6A and Cartersville at No. 1 in 4A.

Class 7A Buford, Class 4A Benedictine and Class A Division II Bowdon all dropped their first game.

Bowdon lost to Class A Division I No. 2 Fellowship Christian and remained No. 1. Buford lost to Class 5A No. 1 Milton and dropped one spot. Benedictine lost to nationally ranked Rabun Gap and fell to No. 4.

“It was a crazy night for sure,” said GPB’s Matt Stewart, who called the Buford-Milton game for GPB’s Football Fridays in Georgia.

The upset theme permeated all classifications, as 23 teams in the GPB Rankings were beaten out of the gate – four in 6A, one in 5A, three in 4A, five in 3A, three in 2A, three in Class A Division I and four in Class A Division II. The top four teams in Division II were knocked off.

Joining the rankings this week are: Valdosta in 6A, Eastside and North Oconee in 4A, Mary Persons, Peach County, Upson-Lee and Troup in 3A, Burke County, Cook and Callaway in 2A, and Seminole County in Division II.
