The Winder-Barrow Bulldoggs reached the 300th win milestone this week with their 57-43 victory over Habersham Central on Homecoming.

Coach Robert Paxia’s team improved to 4-2 and is tied with Clarke Central for first place in Region 8-5A at 2-0.

Winder-Barrow has been playing football since 1955 and has advanced to the postseason 17 times, although it has never won a region championship.

Winder’s best team was 1993 edition coached by the legendary Phil Jones. The Bulldogs – the school had yet to adopted the “double-G” nickname – went 11-3 and reached the Class 3A semifinals before losing to Thomasville.

Jones was the most successful coach in school history. The hall of famer spent 13 seasons at the school from 1984-96 and went 81-58-2.

Among the more notable players who have come through the program are lineman Hiawatha Berry (Georgia), defensive lineman Logan Cash (Clemson), quarterback Philly Jones (Furman), Mike Newell (Clemson) and offensive lineman Matt Sorrells (Georgia).
