A “sweet” dog waiting 800 days in a Georgia shelter “just wanted to be loved” — then came good news.

Queenie was finally adopted, ending her two-year stay at the Humane Society of Forsyth County.

“This sweet girl has hit the jackpot with a loving family who is already showering her with all the love and affection she deserves,” the shelter wrote Oct. 19 in a Facebook post. “We couldn’t be happier for her! While we’re going to miss seeing her adorable face every day, knowing she’s in her perfect home makes it all worth it.”

The heartwarming adoption came after a journey that started in 2022. At the time, Queenie was transferred from an animal control facility and arrived at the shelter with her 10 babies, according to past social media posts and humane society spokesperson Amanda Porter.

As the puppies got older, all of them landed in new homes. But the mama dog spent more time waiting for her turn, eventually becoming the humane society’s longest resident.

“She just wanted to be loved, and everybody who came into contact with Queenie fell in love with her,” Porter told McClatchy News in a phone interview. “I think the barriers of finding that perfect home really did lie in her age and her food and skin allergies.”

Porter said the dog also may have been overlooked because of the requirement that she be the only pet in her next home. As she waited for her second chance, the shelter described her as a loyal and “charming” mixed-breed pup.

“She may be 8.5 years old, but her heart is as young and vibrant as ever, and she has so much love left to give,” the shelter wrote Oct. 11. “She enjoys leisurely walks, playtime, and lounging with her human. With her mature age, Queenie is well past the energetic puppy stage, which means she’s a calm and well-mannered companion.”

Then, after Queenie spent 801 days in the shelter, the animal organization shared the emotional update that she got a new home.

“There were a lot of happy tears the day that she got adopted,” Porter said. “Everyone was, of course, ecstatic for her to be able to go home and live in a warm, comfortable house. But we all miss her face around the shelter too.”

The humane society is in Cumming, a roughly 40-mile drive northeast from Atlanta.
