Bowdon’s powerful running game cranked out 271 yards and the Red Devils rolled to their third consecutive state championship, beating Brooks County 34-14 in the Class A Division II title game on Monday.

The No. 2-ranked Red Devils (12-2) were led by Nate Bhony with 19 carries for 128 yards and Joshawia Davis with 11 carries for 107 yards. Quarterback Charles Maxell threw for 122 yards and one touchdown and ran for 30 yards.

Bowdon’s defensive standouts were Dylan McGrinn, who had 12 tackles, and JaMichael Jones, Davis and Malykie Vickers with five tackles apiece.

No. 6 Brooks County (10-5) was led by Chris Cole, who ran 27 times for 140 yards, and quarterback Junior Burrus, who completed 10 of 26 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns.

The Trojans were led defensively by Amarjae Mitchell, who had 14 tackles and a sack, and Marquis Williams, who had nine tackles, three for loss, and one sack.

Bowdon took a 7-0 lead on a 47-yard run by Bhony, only to have Brooks County strie for back-to-back scores on a 47-yard pass from Burrus to Camauri Brinson and an 18-yard throw from Burrus to George Lamons Jr.

Bowdon scored with 24 seconds left in the half on a 2-yard run by Joshawia Davis, but missed the extra point and trailed 14-13 at the break.

The Devils upped their lead to 19-14 midway in the third quarter on a 43-yard pass from Maxell Jonah to  Kaiden Prothro. But the two-point run was unsuccessful.

Bowdon put it away with two scores in the fourth quarter – a 1-yard run by Jonah Wilson to complete an 87-yard drive. Davis finished the scoring with a 66-yard run that saw him drag two would-be tacklers for the last five yards into the end zone.
