Great Migrations Screening and Bethel Bara Cemetery Cleanup

Join GPB and the Greene County Library for a screening of Great Migrations followed by a chat with Greene County African American Director and Founder Mamie Hillman. Following the screening, we will head over to Bethel Bara Cemetery to clean up the historic African American cemetery.
10 a.m.
Great Migrations: A People on the Move explores the transformative impact of Black migration on American culture and society. From the waves of Black Americans to the North—and back South—over the last century to the growing number of immigrants from Africa and the Caribbean today, the film shows how movement is a defining feature of the Black experience. We will see excerpts from the film followed by a conversation with Greene County African American Director and Founder Mamie Hillman. Then we will travel to clean up the historic Bethel Bara Cemetery which may house Martin Luther King Jr.’s great grandparents. Light food and drinks will be provided during the screening.
For the Cemetery Clean Up:
- Please dress for the weather with outdoor clothes including long pants, work or hiking boots, and gloves
- We suggest bringing lunch and plenty of drinking water for yourself (some snacks will be available)
- We will have some rakes and other tools but feel free to bring yours
