The High School Football season is three weeks old and it seems pretty clear to me that Lowndes is the best team in the state.  The Vikings opened the season by crushing Winnersville rival and defending 6A state champion Valdosta 45-0.  Then came a 56-0 win over Broward, Florida’s International School.  This past Friday night Lowndes walloped up-and-coming Parkview 64-38. It was 57-10 heading to the fourth quarter. 

Quarterback Michael Barrett was 12-14 passing for 195 yards and two touchdowns, plus rushed for 187 yards on 13 carries and scored a touchdown.  In a state that boasts the top two-rated quarterbacks in the nation in Harrison’s Justin Fields and Cartersville’s Trevor Lawrence, don’t sleep on Barrett.  He might not have the recruiting resume that the other two do, but just try tackling him or slowing down his offense. 

Barrett is currently an ESPN 3-star athlete with 16 offers from the likes of Michigan, LSU, Tennessee and Georgia Tech.  That means a lot of college programs that are recruiting him don’t even see him as a quarterback at the next level.

Never mind…he’s an all-state caliber quarterback at this level and just may lead the Vikings to their first state championship since 2007.

Speaking of recruiting, here’s a look at of some of the top Georgia players to commit since the start of the season.  Roswell Quarterback Cordell Littlejohn committed to Illinois last week.  He’s played just two games for the Hornets after transferring in from Lincolnton, NC High School in the off-season along with his younger brother Jamal who is a junior linebacker. 

You have to imagine the Littlejohns acclimated to Roswell fairly quickly.  After all their family ties run deep at the school.  They are cousins with the Hoppers.  Tyrone who starred with the Hornets and is now a redshirt freshman linebacker at North Carolina.  Tyneil who is an ESPN 3-star and #11 ranked tight end in the country and Tyron who is an ESPN 3-star junior cornerback with the Hornets.  How would you like to play pick-up football at their family reunion?

Another big time commitment since the start of the season is Alpharetta’s Jaycee Horn to Tennessee. He is an ESPN 4-star and #20 ranked cornerback in the nation, not to mention the son of former NFL star wide receiver Joe Horn. Early in the summer Jaycee had stricken the Vols from his list and told folks that Alabama and South Carolina were his finalists. Two months later everything changed and he committed to play on Rocky Top. Apparently there’s no truth to the rumor that Jaycee used his dad’s cell phone to call Butch Jones and make his commitment. You might remember Joe Horn was fined $30,000 by the No Fun League back in 2003 for using a cell phone during one of his touchdown celebrations. Good thing Jaycee’s getting a scholarship haha.

Perhaps the biggest of the commitments in Georgia since the start of the season came from Brookwood’s Matthew Hill. The ESPN 4-star and #20 ranked wide receiver committed to the Auburn Tigers just days before the Broncos opened their season in the Corky Kell Classic. Hill and the Broncos have started the season a disappointing 1-2 but showed signs of coming around this past Friday with a big 35-7 win over rival South Gwinnett.

And before we go…this comes from the “Just like Big Brother” department.  The night before former Houston County star Jake Fromm was called into duty in his first college game and led Georgia to a season-opening victory over App State when Jacob Eason was injured, his younger brother Dylan Fromm was lighting it up in Warner Robins 38-35 win over Peach County.  Dylan was 30-of-40 passing for 315-yards and three touchdowns as the Demons improved to 3-0.  Dylan’s team is off this week before playing his former school Houston County two Fridays from now.  Jake will be starting against Notre Dame this Saturday.

One other entry in the “Just like Big Brother” category goes to former Grady star QB Caylin Newton who’s big is none other than Cam.  Well Caylin did something even Cam never did leading his school Howard to the biggest point-spread upset in the history of college football.  Behind Caylin’s 140 yards passing and 190 yards rushing, Howard defeated UNLV 43-40 last weekend despite being a 45-point underdog.
