Opportunity ATL Set To Help Atlanta’s Opportunity Youth Find Lasting Careers
Primary Content
We told you about the 100,000 Opportunities Initiative last spring, and how the job fair that they put on was catered to the country’s “opportunity youth,” or those between the ages of 16 and 24 who are neither working or in school.
The event, which brought some of the biggest corporate employers in the country to the Georgia World Congress Center, was billed as “just the beginning” for the Atlanta-metro outreach.
The continuation of the pledge—to find, engage, and hire opportunity youth—is taking place next month in Decatur, as the Metro Atlanta Chamber has launched Opportunity ATL, which will provide many of the same resources, partners, and (even more) employers as the original event from the spring.
The event will take place Tuesday, October 16th from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Goodwill Career Center in Decatur, Georgia. The job fair itself will open at 11:00 AM, but for those who want to attend a pre-fair workshop they can do so.
JOB SEEKERS CAN REGISTER FOR THE EVENT HERE
Amy Lancaster is the workforce development director for the Metro Atlanta Chamber. She told Georgia@Work about the on-site support options available to job seekers attending the event, which includes resume building assistance, a professional attire coat closet for those who don’t have business attire, as well as on-site job applications.
Opportunity ATL is here to serve and help connect Atlanta’s opportunity youth to jobs and resources. One way they’re helping make it easier to attend is by running bus shuttles from the Decatur MARTA stop to the event location from 9:00 to 4:30 on the day of the event.
Whatever it takes to get those who fit the profile to the job fair.
“Just show up,” Lancaster said. “That’s the main thing. Show up and be positive and we’re going to help you. Showing up is the most important thing they can do.”
Lancaster said the list of employers is still in flux, but she did say Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Bank of America, Atlanta Gas Light, Goodwill, Delaware North, and First Step Staffing have each signed on.
