Nekiyah Thompson scored 23 points to lead No. 6-ranked Douglass to a 57-51 win over No. 5 Early County in the Class AA girls championship, giving the Astros their first girls basketball championship.

Douglass (27-6) also got 12 points and eight rebounds from Kayla Pruitt and 10 points from Ashuntee Weems.
Early County (27-6) got 20 points and 14 rebounds from Kakayla Timpson, who also blocked five shots. Jordan Eafford added 10 points and nine rebounds and Ta’Ziaya Jones had 12 rebounds.
Douglass led by as many as 11 in the third quarter, but Early would not go away. The Bobcats tied the game 51-51 on a layup by Jones, but Douglass scored the final six points of the game, five of the points by Thompson.
Douglass won despite making only 8 of 20 from the line, because Early County was only 7-for-14 from the stripe.
The Astros are the first Atlanta Public Schools girls team to w in a state championship since Mays in 2017.
