In this video, examine strategies to identify the properties of quadrilaterals—specifically, parallelograms. Students will compare and contrast squares, rectangles, and rhombuses, which are all parallelograms. In the accompanying classroom activity, students create posters identifying the properties of various quadrilaterals. They explore how these shapes compare and contrast and then analyze the ways that parallelograms distinguish themselves from other quadrilaterals.
Skill: Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category. For example, all rectangles have four right angles and squares are rectangles, so all squares have four right angles.

Students explore the connection between division and fractions while dividing up cookies. This video focuses on recognizing patterns when modeling dividing up cookies to share with people.
Skill: Interpret a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator (a/b = a ÷ b). Solve word problems involving division of whole numbers leading to answers in the form of fractions or mixed numbers, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Example: 3/5 can be interpreted as “3 divided by 5" and as "3 shared by 5."

Creating Numerical Patterns with Rules: Bianca Functions in the Wild

In this Cyberchase video, Bianca and her friend go camping and soon realize that Bianca has left the food at home. They find a vending machine in the woods, but it doesn't dispense the food that corresponds with the numbers Bianca presses. After several attempts to get her favorite candy bar, Bianca discovers a pattern, or rule. Each time she enters a number, she gets a snack labeled with the number she pressed plus two (n + 2). In the accompanying classroom activity, students play a dice game in pairs in which one student applies a rule in secret that the other student must guess. Points are awarded for correct guesses, and students are penalized for incorrect guesses.
